Are You Drinking Plastic from Bottle Water?

March 15, 2018

The World Health Organization (WHO) reveals plastic particles high in the water of plastic bottled brands globally. A new study looked at 259 bottles from 19 locations in nine countries from 11 brands finding 325 plastic particles for every liter of water sold as reported in The Guardian’s article, “WHO launches health review after microplastics found in 90% of bottled water.”

Only 17 bottled water samples were found free of plastics but the highest concentration was 10,000 plastic pieces for every liter of water. Scientists from SUNY Fredonia conducted the examination commissioned by journalism project Orb Media, a nonprofit journalism organization in Washington, DC. The report also revealed they found twice as many plastic particles in bottled water as compared to an earlier study of theirs on plastic in tap water.

Orb Media interviewed individuals globally about their perceptions of drinking bottled water.

The most recent examination of microplastics in bottled water falls on the heels of the earlier study finding microplasics in unfiltered tap water.
